Simple Acts, Big Impact | Senior Citizen’s Day

Once per week I sent a simple postcard to my Grandmother when she was thousands of miles away in her retirement community. Through this tender act I reminded her of my love and I helped to motivate her to walk daily to her mailbox. After several years she could no longer walk to her mailbox at 94 years of age. As a cash-strapped college student I finally made the visit. At her bedside I found the tremendous stack of postcards. This mountain of love had become one of her most prized possessions.

CalendarSCD.pngAugust 21st is Senior Citizen’s Day where in the USA and Canada we pause to pay tribute to the seniors who have helped build our countries and shaped out lives. It is a personal reminder to me to consider some simple acts I might take to honor these very special people. Here are a few ideas I would like to share with you as I ask that you consider one simple act of loving seniors.

Send a postcard to a special senior;

Share, with one other person or on social media, a personal senior-related story that positively impacted your life;

Take a senior out for coffee – thank them, ask them questions, learn something new;

Donate to a senior related nonprofit.

In closing I wish to share a few quotes that will inspire you. You may even wish to share one on FaceBook in memory of your beloved senior.

Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them – James Baldwin

There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age – Sophia Loren

I want to awaken the passion and creativity of youth, combine it with the wisdom, experience and insight of elders, and transform our world – Ocean Robbins

The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes – Frank Lloyd Wright
